HOW TO SELL YOUR TIMBER

There are two ways to sell your timber. One is “Pay as Cut”, the other is “In the Bulk”. When you sell your timber in the bulk, the buyer has to make an estimate of the timber’s value. He then offers an amount to you according to that estimate. He has to be conservative to allow for errors and will pay the landowner a lump sum before harvesting begins. When you sell your timber “Pay as Cut”, your timber is given a price per ton , cord or scale. The amount is specified as to the type of timber you have. For instance, pine pulp (paper wood) is given a price, chip and saw another price, and pine logs another price. The other types of wood are priced accordingly as well. This insures that you receive money determined by what your timber is worth within each separate market based on the prices agreed upon for the different types of wood. As each load of timber is harvested and taken to the mills, it is weighed at the mill and the mill gives a ticket noting the weight and type of wood. You will receive a copy of these tickets when we send payment to you for the loads harvested.(If Requested) Your first payment arrives usually about two weeks after we start harvesting and then will arrive each consecutive week afterwards. The payments will continue until shortly after the harvest is complete. “Pay as Cut” eliminates the error of an estimate as to how much wood is on your property. It insures that you are paid for all the wood hauled to the mills.
There are advantages and disadvantages to selling either way .I will go over some of these. Disadvantages to selling Pay as Cut: #1 You need to be dealing with someone that is honest , If not they could haul loads and not score them to your tract. This can be overcome by using someone that is trustworthy or you can count the loads. #2 Another thing I have seen happen on a pay as cut sale is, The logger cut what is easy to get and leave some timber that is hard to get.(This hard to get timber may never make it to the mill) #3 You have to wait until logging begins and loads are delivered into the mills before you are paid. Advantages to selling Pay as Cut: #1 You will get paid for every ton of wood that is hauled off of your place. Usually resulting in more money in your pocket. #2 If it is a thinning job it allows for a much better job .It gives the logger the freedom to go back over the tract and cut his turn trees or any other trees that may have been damaged during logging operations. #3 If the underbrush is thick a cruiser tends to underestimate actual volume.
